The very early development of a drug in Pharma is often a fascinating story that is usually lost or distorted in hindsight. Having talked to many senior scientific folk over the years, getting a candidate drug (CD) to be taken into man is the scientific equivalent of winning an Oscar. Not many scientists working on Lead Identification (LI) projects ever get to see their ‘baby’ go into man for phase I safety testing. It’s a life achievement. With the tens of thousands of day’s work and the disappointments of experiments that failed to deliver, getting a drug to ‘CD’ status is an amazing feat. There are just so many things that can go wrong.
